Tuesday, December 8, 2020 - Chambers Fight Emergency Ordinance Penalizing Businesses Up to $10,000

Sacramento County Board of Supervisors - The board received a request to implement an Emergency Ordinance authorizing financial penalties up to $10,000 every day against businesses that violate public health orders to contain the spread of Coronavirus. Your Rancho Cordova Chamber, together with chambers from around the region, rallied to oppose the ordinance.  We reached out to Supervisor Don Nottoli, who represents our region, asking him to oppose the proposal. We explained the ordinance unfairly burdened business. A much more significant contributor to spreading the virus comes via private gatherings and the focus needed to be on such gatherings not on business. Additionally, we secured opposition to the proposal from the Rancho Cordova City Council.

SUCCESS! - the proposal was pulled from the board agenda and not brought forward for consideration. Here is a link to the letter submitted to the members of the board. (Link to the letter we provided to the Board of Supervisors)

Advocacy - the immediate needs of our chamber members and the business community are paramount. However, there is a lot of activity taking place at all levels of government; some of it good and some definitely not so good.  The Rancho Cordova Chamber team is monitoring and engaging with our elected representatives during this pandemic to ensure the voice of business is heard. Below are examples of the efforts made on your behalf.

Joint Business Letter:  Workplace Regulations, Request for Suspension

UCAN* Chambers signed onto this letter developed by the California Business Roundtable to Gov. Newsom requesting the suspension of workplace rules that may present liability to businesses during the rapid transition to working from home.

Response to Leg Leadership re: CA Labor Federal COVID-19 proposals

UCAN* Chambers have signed onto this letter developed by the Cal Chamber to Legislative Leaders in response to a letter sent by the California Labor Federation seeking expansion or family/sick leave benefits, workers compensation benefits and definitions of independent contractors.

Requested Suspension of Property Tax Late Fees

While individuals are provided an extension to file state and federal taxes and some proposals seek to enable tenants to receive a “grace” from rental payments on business properties, there is no similar benefit/relief to business property owners.  CBPOA is encouraging the state to require counties to waive late filing fees for property taxes for three months.  The Governor has chosen not to issue such an order, leaving the issuance of late fees for late payment to each county.

*UCAN - Our Chamber, together with five other local chambers, form the United Chamber Advocacy Network (U-CAN). UCAN advocates for a proactive, pro-small business, state-level policy agenda grounded in our members’ experience and perspective. We influence the Legislature – advancing our shared pro-business agenda before legislators, staff and committees.
